So why did I register a domain named inactive.net, well that is a good question so let me explain. In early 2000 shortly after selling my company (pacifier.com) I was in my office talking with one of my techs at the time. We started joking around about what I was going to do next. I said I guess I will get inactive, I then said out loud that I wondered if inactive.net was taken. I checked and sure enough it was available so I registered it. I started messing around and thought I would build a web site, now for the people that know me you are laughing right now as I am seriously graphically challenged and make no secret of the fact. I will delegate those sorts of tasks to folks that work for me or pay someone to do it. I usually can tell if something will be appealing but am totally happy in a text world. I played with the site a bit after I "retired" from working for the folks I sold too, my original concept was that I would have a Joke site which I essentially copied the html from someone elses web site. It looked ok and got a few hits which was fine. I really was not after hits as it was more for a few friends and family when they asked me for something. The site/domain was really meant to represent that I was inactive, I was planning to read email at the domain but some idiot started using

What a moron, I guess he thought that it was not a valid address or was just totally stupid who knows. Later I added a Photo Gallery I found in open source that seems to work really well, I have it setup to sync between my pictures directory on a couple different systems (work and home) all the pictures that Kristy and I take once I have sorted them. This is probably the main function of the site at this point. I occassionaly register other domain names if I think I may use them for something. For example I also own stopspam.org , I let a longtime Pacifier customer put the content up on it in the hopes that it would go somewhere. At first I started getting phone calls from the spammers complaining that they were listed. I suppose you all can guess what my response was to those calls. I may actually do something someday with that site in the hopes that it provides some resource to people out there. Either that or turn it into an RBL/Blacklist resource but there seems to already be several of those such as the folks at Spamhaus that are doing a reasonable job. With all that said I am far from inactive and have been slowly working on the site as I have time (which seems like never). I may add features to the site if I feel like it, possibly a few links here and there and may even jazz up the graphics at some point. One thing I do plan to add is a link to the weather and roof web cam at the beach house but it is one of those "when I have time". Doug |
